Golf Scholarships: An introduction into the sporting scholarship

When you think of golf, you think of legends such as Tiger Woods, Danny Willett (One of ours!), Luke Donald, Paul Casey, or Russell Knox (Another one of ours!). Around 65% of the professionals currently on the USPGA Tour used to play collegiate golf in the States. Did you know collegiate golf is thought to be the best route to a pro golf career because of several factors, including intense competition. Playing week in and week out against some of the best amateur golfers in the world and on world class golf courses such as TPC Sawgrass, Pebble Beach, Augusta National and many more.

If you’re looking for a route to develop your golfing abilities and academics, Golf scholarships are ideal for achieving your goals. Golf Scholarships are awarded by universities and colleges to very talented golfers, which allows the athlete to participate in collegiate, intercollegiate matches and national championships. Like most scholarships, both male and female athletes are able to gain golf scholarships.

Golf Scholarships: When should I apply?

One of the best times to go to the USA on a golf scholarship is straight after graduation from high school or up to a few years after. It’s worth noting that only athletes aged 18 – 24 can compete within the college leagues, any older and you will be looking at competing in the NAIA. Coaches in the States are increasingly committing to younger athletes as this gives them the opportunity to work with the athletes for a longer period of time. Depending on how long you want to go to the USA for, you can go for one, two, three or four years. The length of time depends on if you wish to seek a bachelor’s degree from your time there. It’s recommend that you go to America as early as possible because this will give you the best chance of gaining a sports scholarship and turning professional after college.

Golf scholarships: How good do I have to be?

Golf Scholarships can be achieved if you are at the right level. To be considered for a sporting scholarship in America, a golfer should be playing off a handicap of 5 or better by the time they’re ready to leave for the states. To be considered for a sporting scholarship to one of the top universities in America an athlete should be pushing themselves to compete in the top national tournaments, this will show college coaches that the athlete/player is ready to compete at a high level in the USA.
