What gets you out the door? What keeps you happy while you’re training?
A new video from the French shoe company Salomon shows a man and his dogs — and how their trail runs are all they need to be happy.
“Happiness is so much simpler than you might think,” the narrator says in the video. “Real happiness is uncomplicated by the rush of life: how much money you have. Don’t have. What you have, or haven’t accomplished. It’s beyond what you feel good or guilty about.”
Check out the video below, and tell me it doesn’t make you want to go for an awesome trail run with an adorable friend or two:
Treat your recruiting like it’s a joyful training run.
“Always go for a run, even if it’s raining,” the narrator says.
I can think of so many times when I’ve stood at my front door, debating whether to go out in the rain for that run. But geared up correctly? Suddenly it doesn’t matter that you’re getting a little wet. At a certain point you give into the fact you’ll be soaked, and start jumping in puddles — all the more fun if you’re with friends.
That’s a pretty great metaphor for recruiting, which can feel tough, stressful and, well, like running in the rain.
But if you get into it, suddenly it’s a lot of fun. And it’s even better when you have the right friends going along with you.
Have the right team assembled to help you with recruiting.
Here’s another line I love from the video: “Surround yourself with the people you love.”
You never have to go through the recruiting process alone. Your parents, guidance counselors, teachers and coaches are all there to help you. We’re here to help you.
But it’s up to you to take that network of love and support and turn it into a successful college search.
(And, when you get to the point of talking to college coaches, “Listen more than you talk. But when you do talk, speak from the heart.”)
Treat your recruiting like a taped audition: always stay positive.
Two other lines from the video that struck me were: “Live in the moment,” and “Have boundless energy.”
The dream absolutely is to play your sport in college.
But if you’re not having fun on the way, what’s the point? If you’re not giving it everything you have in every practice, every game, every conditioning run you do on your own, where’s the joy in it?
