College Program Highlight - Syracuse University

“Anyone who has watched college sports on TV is familiar with the bright orange color associated with Syracuse University. They’ve seen the screaming fans and the stadiums overflowing with cheering hordes. But beyond all the athletic fanfare is passion of another sort: Syracuse has set out to become a student-centered research university. World famous in its signature field of communications, SU is also strong in information studies, architecture, and public affairs. The university has been a national leader in promoting socioeconomic diversity.”

Syracuse University is a private institution that was founded in 1870 and sits on 721 acres in central New York state. Few schools are associated with a color as strongly as Syracuse University. A brilliant shade of orange is tied into campus life, manifesting itself in student media outlets such as The Daily Orange, the student-run newspaper, and CitrusTV, the television studio. The school’s sports teams are known simply as Orange and compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference, cheered on by school mascot Otto the Orange.

Syracuse is an R-1 Research school and boasts nationally ranked academic programs in communications, architecture, business, and engineering. With about 100 inches of snowfall each year, the cold winters at Syracuse University give students plenty of opportunities for skiing, snowboarding and sledding on nearby mountains. On campus, there are more than 300 student organizations. About 30 percent of Syracuse students are involved in Greek life. All freshmen and sophomore students must live in on-campus housing, though there are some exceptions. The free Connective Corridor bus shuttles transport students between campus and downtown Syracuse, where annual celebrations include a Winterfest and a Jazz Fest.

“Teaming with NASA, the university has a $3 million virtual aerospace engineering facility-one of three in the nation-where students have helped design a reusable space launch vehicle. SU students have also participated in NASA’s reduced-gravity student flight programs. The university offers an honors program for a small number of the most motivated students, and a large portion of students participate in undergraduate research. Thirty-seven percent study abroad via centers in eight countries, as well as more than 65 World Partner programs. SU centers in Los Angeles and New York City offer semester-long programs for those pursuing careers in the entertainment industry.”

Syracuse University Rugby Football Club was founded in 1969, and has enjoyed much success since its humble beginning. The Hammerheads are a D1A program and compete in the Liberty Empire Conference with clubs and universities across New York State and the Northeast, and are consistently one of the best teams in the division, winning the conference title in fall 2015. The club has also made their mark on a national stage. In 2015 Syracuse competed in the national rugby playoffs in North Carolina, and over the past two seasons have played bowl games in Pittsburgh and Rhode Island. The fall 15s league season provides 10-12 games, depending on playoffs. The spring 7s season consists of scrimmages and tournaments over six weekends, as well as 15s games for a developmental squad. A flexible, yet serious five-day practice schedule operates at fields on campus and at the Hookway athletic field in the fall. There are spring training opportunities in the gym, weight room, Manley Field House and the Carrier Dome. There is also an opportunity in the spring for an international tour. In the past the club has visited and competed against teams in Argentina, England, Spain and Portugal to name a few. All Syracuse undergraduate students are eligible to play for the team, and students who attend SUNY ESF can as well. The club also boasts a high team GPA and a 100% graduation rate for seniors.

Upon establishment in 1997, the Syracuse University Women’s Rugby Football Club (SUWRFC) became an immediate contender in the New York State Rugby Conference. The club has competed in the Conference Playoffs (Final Four) for the past 10 years, reaching the finals 4 times and winning the Conference in 2000. The Club has been invited to the Territorial (Regional) Championships a total of 4 times. SUWRFC provides a challenging athletic experience in a flexible, supportive environment. The experience includes skill development, fitness and playing the most exciting game in the world. There is a place for ALL backgrounds and sizes with no experience necessary, no cuts and everybody plays.

“From special partnerships with NASA to opportunities to study abroad or help out right at home, students at Syracuse know they’ve got something special. The wintry climate can be problematic, but the ubiquitous bright orange paraphernalia all over campus is enough to warm anyone. For many, one senior’s words prove to be true: “You’ll never find a school that has more school spirit than we do.”
